Alan
was born in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii, in 1952 and
graduated from Henry Perrine Baldwin High School
on Maui in 1970, where he was heavily involved
in student government as both Student Body President
and Class President. He also participated in Key
Club and Varsity Track. After school hours, Alan
was actively involved in church and scouting activities.
Alan then left Maui to attend Coe College in Cedar
Rapids, Iowa where he was on the Dean's List,
was elected Student Body Treasurer and Student
Senator, was a member of the Air Force R.O.T.C.
program, played Varsity soccer, and was a member
of the studentrun KCOE-FM radio station. Prior
to obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics
in 1974, he traveled to Japan where he participated
in the East Asian Studies Program at Waseda University
in Tokyo. While in Japan, Alan taught English
on a parttime basis and participated in the Waseda
University Aikido Club.
In 1974, Alan was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant
in the U.S. Air Force as a strategic and tactical
airlift navigator and rose to the rank of captain.
He served primarily at Travis Air Force Base in
Fairfield, California and at Yokota Air Base in
Tokyo. His duties included Squadron Scheduling
Officer, Instructor Navigator, and Squadron Liaison
Officer with the Japanese public and media. As
an aircrew member, Alan has flown extensively
in the Pacific region, Southeast Asia, the Republic
of the Philippines, Indonesia, Europe, and the
Middle East.
Alan left the Air Force in 1980 to enter the William
S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawaii.
He served as an editor and staff member of the
University of Hawaii Law Review and was a Steering
Committee Member of the International Conference
on Humanitarian Law. He obtained his J.D. degree
in 1983 and was admitted to practice in October
of that year. Alan joined Pitluck & Kaulukukui
after associating with Carlsmith Carlsmith Wichman & Case (now known as Carlsmith Ball) for two
and one-half years, practicing in the areas of
real estate and estate planning. After four years
as an associate, Wayne Pitluck and Alan formed
the partnership of Pitluck & Kido in April
of 1989. Alan currently practices primarily in
the areas of real property, business, alternate
dispute resolution, estate planning, probate,
and the preparation of real estate conveyancing
documents. Alan has served as a director of the
Hawaii State Bar Association, President of the
Hawaii Institute for Continuing Legal Education,
and is currently a member of the Hawaii State
Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
Outside
of the practice of law, Alan enjoys coaching soccer
and basketball, music, shoreline fishing, cooking,
and promoting the joys of Japanese saké as a director
with the Kokusai Saké Kai (International Saké
Association). In addition, he participates in
volunteer work for local charities, is a volunteer
mediator and arbitrator for the Circuit Court
of the First Circuit, State of Hawaii, and has
served as legal counsel to (and former officer
and director of) P.A.R.E.N.T.S., Inc., a Hawai’i
non-profit organization working towards preventing
child abuse and neglect.
Alan is married with one son. His wife is a partner
with the law firm of Cades Schutte in Honolulu,
where she practices in the areas of real estate,
real estate financing, and environmental law. |
